Food Donation Policy

At Open Heart Kitchen, we are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our community members. Your support helps us serve our community every day. To ensure the safety and quality of the food we distribute, all donations must meet our food safety standards.

Please note, we do not accept:
  • Homemade food
  • Pre-prepared or cooked items
  • Packages that have been opened or tampered with

Do you pick up donations?
No, we do not offer donation pick-up services. Please contact us to schedule a drop-off appointment.

What if I represent a business or organization with a large donation?
If you are donating large quantities (e.g., pallet-sized donations), we may be able to schedule a pick-up depending on availability.  Please contact: donatefood@openheartkitchen

Can I host a food drive to support Open Heart Kitchen?
Yes! We welcome individuals and groups interested in organizing food drives. While canned food drives are popular, you can also help by:

  • Making a one-time or recurring monetary donation

  • Starting a virtual food drive

Monetary donations allow us to purchase food in bulk at discounted wholesale prices. To get started, contact our Development Team: development@openheartkitchen.org
 
Do you accept fruits and vegetables from personal gardens?
Yes, we accept homegrown produce. However, we are not able to pick up or harvest these items. Please contact us to schedule a drop-off.

Can I donate leftovers from a party or event?
No. We do not accept leftover, homemade, or prepared food.

Do you accept canned goods or shelf-stable items past their expiration date?
It depends. We follow the Alameda County Community Food Bank’s guidelines. If the item is still safe to consume, we may be able to accept it.  Please contact: donatefood@openheartkitchen.org

Do you accept non-food items such as hygiene kits or blankets?
Yes, but only on an as-needed basis. We occasionally accept:

  • Hygiene items

  • New clothing

  • Gently used or new blankets or sleeping bags

How to Donate
