Hot Meal Programs
At Open Heart Kitchen we strive to serve a hot meal packed with nutrition. By taking advantage of donated food and the hard work of our volunteers, we are able to keep the overall food and supply cost at a minimum. Our menus are simple, nutritious and fast to cook, since our kitchen equipment is limited and our chefs are volunteers.
Hot Meals are made from scratch by our volunteers and served to anyone in need. Each meal consists of a protein, starch, vegetable, green salad or fruit salad, bread, a beverage and dessert. All desserts are donated from local grocery stores.
Below are a few samples of what's cooking:
- Chicken served with penne pasta
- Beef and Bean Chili
- Enchilada Casserole
- Turkey, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
Senior Meal Program
Our Senior Meal program is open to all low-income seniors in the Tri- Valley area. Seniors often have special dietary concerns, and Open Heart Kitchen meets the requirements by focusing on low fat, low sodium "senior friendly" dinners. A fresh salad bar is served every day. As seen in the menu samples below, low income seniors can have healthy dinners prepared for them!
- Baked salmon fillet with lemon sauce, steamed rice, spinach and vanilla pudding
- Open faced tuna sandwich on sourdough with fresh green beans and Jell-o salad with mandarin oranges
- Baked Chicken, seasoned rice, mixed vegetables and a chocolate chip cookie
Weekend Box Lunch Program
Open Heart Kitchen's Weekend Box Lunch Program accomplishes an amazing task: ensuring low-income kids have something to eat over the weekend when school lunch programs are unavailable. Nutrition is a priority for young growing children. We focus on pre-packaged and non-perishable, aiming for as much nutrition as possible.
Example of items in the boxed lunches:
- Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
- Fresh fruit or fruit cup
- Fruit juice
- Raisins
- Granola or protein Bars
- Extra goodies from donors
